What is style? “If you have to ask, you’ll never know.”
It can’t be taught, but it can be learned. It’s the process of looking at the world with our mind open, studying, practicing, and pushing it all through the funnel of our own experience.
In the words of the great Glenn O’Brien: “Style is the visual manifestation of personality… constructed by identification—a process in which a subject assimilates attributes of another and is transformed, wholly or partially, after the model the other provides.”
Essential for any creative, style is a work in progress. It’s in the details and nuances. It’s that secret ingredient that sets us apart and gives us our visual signature.
